How to Get a UAE Driving License in Dubai as an Expat

If you’re new to Dubai and want to drive, you’ll need to know how to get a UAE driving license in Dubai as an expat. The process depends on where your current licence was issued—but once you know the rules, it’s simple.
Step 1: Check If You Can Transfer
Citizens from countries such as the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe can exchange their home-country licence for a UAE one without taking driving lessons. You’ll need:
- Your original valid licence
- Emirates ID
- Eye test certificate
- Passport and visa copy
- No-objection letter (if required by employer)
Step 2: Complete an Eye Test
Visit an RTA-approved optician like Yateem or Rivoli EyeZone for a quick eye test. Results are sent directly to the RTA.
Step 3: Apply Through the RTA
You can apply online via the RTA website or in person at a Customer Happiness Centre. The transfer usually costs around AED 870.
Step 4: If You Need to Learn from Scratch
If your licence is from a country not on the approved list, you’ll need to enrol in lessons with an RTA-approved driving school like Emirates Driving Institute or Galadari.
After lessons, you’ll take theory, parking, and road tests before earning your UAE licence.
